Hypostyle were tasked with substantial refurbishment and redevelopment of the Lord Provost Henry E Rae Community Hall in Middlefield, Aberdeen for NHS Grampian. The existing structure would be rebranded as ‘The Hub’ to accommodate a new pre-school nursery, NHS accommodation space and activites for the local community. The Hub is a flexible building with movable walls to allow various facilities for the end users.
The nursery has space for seventy-three children and relevant services, such as kitchens, changing facilities, laundry rooms, a sensory room and offices. The entire nursery extension benefits from underfloor heating and has resulted in low running and maintenance costs for the Client. Externally, the nursery also has access to a South-facing garden with features such as a covered deck, landscaped play area and sandpit for the children.
Within the existing building, Hypostyle led the refurbishment of NHS accommodation space and adjacent community halls. The NHS accommodation comprises a suite of new treatment and consultation rooms with support spaces providing community health facilities. The main community hall was provided with additional storage areas and a smaller hall was improved to create sufficient space for an after-school club of twenty-four children.
In consideration of future risks, the Design Team also collaborated on the site infrastructure to serve a major flood alleviation scheme for the wider area. The completed works exceeded the expectations of the Client and prepared the site in anticipation of further development to the adjacent Middlefield Park.
