Hypostyle were appointed by the University of Strathclyde to lead substantial refurbishment and redevelopment works of the John Anderson Building in Glasgow for the Department of Physics. The works have established the building as the Scottish Centre for the Application of Plasma-based Accelerators research centre for the Scottish Universities Physics Alliance.
Our design included internal refurbishment of the existing building to create laboratories and offices, and improve accessible sanitary facilities, external refurbishment of the roof structure to improve building fabric performance and a multi-storey extension with associated landscaping.
In addition to the works, the Design Team coordinated the design and construction of a concrete bunker on the ground floor of the building for the operation of high-power lasers. The bunker design included radiation shielding and unique compressed air operated sliding doors. It was essential for the design to meet onerous vibration criteria for experiments of 3µm and was installed on a rubber matting system to absorb and inhibit any external vibrations.
The John Anderson Building is now home to the highest average power laser system in the world.
