St. Ninian’s Crescent is a residential development of a previous brownfield site in Paisley for Link Group. The project delivered twenty-three affordable housing units, including nineteen semi-detached houses; and four cottage flats (two dedicated wheelchair accessible units).

Our proposal takes cognisance of the massing and scale of the surrounding streetscape. The low-rise, two-storey development is predominantly semi-detached properties with small, ‘mews style’ designed properties served by private courtyards.

The development explores a new typology with the housing sitting side-to-side, or semi-attached. The housing has been cleverly planned to form a strong street edge to St. Ninian’s Road with gardens located between the properties. The aim was to provide active frontage, with front doors on to the street, to help encourage neighbourliness along both St. Ninian’s Road and St. Ninian’s Crescent.

The houses are essentially flipped in their plots, standing across the width of the site, which opens up space between them for gardens and parking. Our creative solution retains a strong street edge, while providing courtyard gardens that do not feel hemmed in nor overshadowed.
