Hypostyle led the Phase 2 development of the Maryhill Locks masterplan in Glasgow for Maryhill Housing Association, instigated by the Glasgow Canal Regeneration Partnership. The Phase 2 site boundary is immediately adjacent to the Forth and Clyde Canal in Maryhill.

Maryhill Housing Association developed the site for 125 homes of varying size throughout a range of residential typologies.

Our design features house types that aim to nestle into the existing slope to maximise the site potential and establish a distinctive identity. Conversely, properties within flatted blocks gain views from their raised vantage points and maximise practical use of private external space. Some of these properties also include balconies and glazed sunspaces as an extension of the living area.

In conjunction with the streetscape design, the proposal introduces the concept of ‘Homezones’. The dwellings adjacent to the canal accommodate further level changes with an increased floor to ceiling height throughout flats overlooking the Forth and Clyde Canal. These flats step down from the entrance level and culminate in a private balcony overlooking the canal towpath below.

The landscape design improves connections to the canal and the River Kelvin Walkway, and features a new shared garden area for residents.

Maryhill Locks Phase 2 achieved an Ecohomes ‘Very Good’ rating and is included in the Scottish Sustainable Communities Initiative.
