Hypostyle Architects Glasgow Edinburgh

University of the West of Scotland, Paisley Campus Refurbishment

This project involved internal alterations/upgrade and external repairs to two existing blocks of student residences on the University of the West of Scotland’s Paisley campus.

As well as the internal proposals, Hypostyle were appointed to offer advice on the condition of the external fabric to both blocks, provide drawings highlighting any recommended repairs and produce a conditional report for each block. The George Street block was predominantly red sandstone and not Listed, but the Lady Lane block is a grade ‘B’ Listed building with an intriguing façade of intricate stone carvings dating back to 1892.

When surveyed via a hoist badly deteriorated and unsafe stonework was identified, and a ‘make safe’ exercise carried out to remove all loose stone which was in danger of falling. Conditional reports were prepared for each block, where defects to the fabric were highlighted and recommended repairs carried out.

The project was completed on time and budget in September 2011.
